RELATIONS VIETNAM - THAILAND:

1. Date of establishment of diplomatic relations with Vietnam: 6/8/1976

2. Political Relations:
Vietnam and Thailand officially established diplomatic relations on August 6, 1976. The bilateral relations have been gradually consolidated and developed since 1991, especially since Vietnam's admission to ASEAN in 1995. The two countries frequently exchange delegations at both high level and working level.
a. Vietnamese leaders' visits to Thailand:
+ January 2-9, 1978: Foreign Minister Nguyen Duy Trinh paid an official visit to Thailand, signed the Agreement on Trade, Economic and Technical Cooperation.
+ September 6 -10, 1978: Prime Minister Pham Van Dong paid an official visit to Thailand, had an audience with His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, and signed a Joint Declaration.
+ May 28-31, 1990: Chief of Staff of Vietnam's People's Army Doan Khue paid a visit to Thailand at the invitation of Thai Defence Minister Gen. Chavalit Yongchaiyudh.
+ September 25-30, 1990: National Assembly Chairman Le Quang Dao paid a visit to Thailand.
+ September 28-30, 1991: Chairman of the Council of Ministers Vo Van Kiet paid an official visit to Thailand, having an audience with His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and talks with Thai Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun.
+ October 15-18, 1993: Secretary General of the Communist Party of Vietnam Do Muoi paid an official visit to Thailand at the invitation of Thai Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai.
+ September 3-7, 1996:  Chairman of the National Assembly Nong Duc Manh paid an official visit to Thailand.
+ August 9-11, 1997:  Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Nguyen Manh Cam paid an official visit to Thailand and signed an Agreement on Sea Border Demarcation between the two countries.
+ October 6-8, 1998: State President Tran Duc Luong paid an official visit to Thailand at the invitation of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
+ March 23-27, 2000: Vice President of State Nguyen Thi Binh paid a friendship visit to Thailand.
+ May 9-12, 2000: Prime Minister Phan Van Khai paid an official visit to Thailand, signing an Agreement on Visa Exemption for Ordinary Passport Holders of Vietnam and Thailand.
+ February 12-17, 2003: Defense Minister Pham Van Tra paid a visit to Thailand, having an audience with His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej
+ September 16-19, 2003: Chairman of National Assembly Nguyen Van An visited Thailand.
+ December 21-22, 2006:  Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung paid a visit to Thailand at the invitation of his Thai counterpart Surayud Chulanont.
b. Thai leaders' visits to Vietnam:
+ November 22-25, 1989: Deputy Prime Minister Bitchai Rattakul paid a visit to Vietnam, and was received by Vietnamese Chairman of the Council of Ministers Do Muoi.
+ January 15-17, 1992: Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun visited Vietnam, signing Vietnam - Thailand Joint Communique.
+ November 15-20, 1992: His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn paid an official visit to Vietnam;
+ March 17-23, 1993: Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Siridhorn visited Vietnam.
+ February 2-5, 1994: Parliament President Marut Bunnag paid an official visit to Vietnam at the invitation of Vietnamese Chairman of the National Assembly Nong Duc Manh.
+ March 16-19, 1994: Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai paid an official visit to Vietnam and signed an Agreement on Science and Technology Cooperation.
+ October 1, 1995: Prime Minister Banharn Silpa-Archa paid an official visit to Vietnam.
+ March 30-31, 1997: Prime Minister Gen. Chavalit Yongchaiyudh paid an official visit to Vietnam.
+ March 2-5, 1999: Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Maj. Gen. Sanan Kajomprasai paid a working visit to Vietnam.
+ April 25-26, 2001: Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra paid an official visit to Vietnam at the invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart Phan Van Khai.
+ October 26, 2006: Prime Minister Gen. Surayud Chulanont paid an official visit to Vietnam.
The First Thailand - Viet Nam Joint Cabinet Retreats were held in Da Nang (Viet Nam) and Nakhon Phanom (Thailand) on 20 and 21 February 2004 respectively. The Viet Nam delegation was led by H.E. Mr. Phan Van Khai, Prime Minister of the S. R of Viet Nam. The Thai delegation was led by H.E. Dr. Thaksin Shinawatra, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand. The Retreat was attended by 47 members of the Vietnamese and Thai Cabinets. On this occasion, 10 documents, including a Joint Statement on Viet Nam - Thailand Cooperation Framework in the first decade of the 21st  Century were concluded.
In the framework of regional and international forums such as ASEAN, ACMECS, EWEC and GMS, Vietnam and Thailand always wish to boost the bilateral cooperative relations. Thailand supports Vietnam's accession to WTO and Vietnam's non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council in 2008-2009 term.
